Mexican Silver

Mexican silver jewelry on Ebay will require a discerning eye to make an informed purchase.  Some of it is obvious tourist junk and not worth purchasing.  However, some of it is new work, modeled after pieces done by Native American Indians and the quality looks quite good.  The difference in price between the Native American pieces and the Mexican work can be explained largely by the cost of labor.  I saw at least one seller which is a foundation using the work as a fundraising activity. I would guess that at least some of the Mexican work ends up north of the border and sold as a genuine local handcraft.

I think there are some real bargains to be found in the Mexcican Silver category.   The work is sometimes good but doesn't have the star quality of Native American work.  To me it seems like a situation where someone who takes the time to study the market could buy many inexpensive pieces, wear and enjoy them for years, and expect that someday their quality will be recognized and prices increase.  That's all speculation of course, but if you can buy it cheaply, and enjoy it in the meantime, it seems like an interesting plan.  Taxaco Silver pieces would be a good place to start your search.  This is a silver mining area of Mexico and there has been high quality silversmithing there for a long time.

We discuss the turquoise used in some of the Mexican jewelry on our turquoise website .
